Our Mission

Conservation driven by vision

We are convinced that if our vision of 'biodiversity for all' is to work anywhere in South Africa, we have the best chance of making it succeed in Cape Town.

Professor Eugene Moll, Chairman of Council, BotSoc

In promoting Tokai Park as a recreational gateway to Table Mountain National Park, Friends of Tokai Park (or FoTP as we frequently refer to ourselves) actively supports SANParks, SANBI, the City of Cape Town, and other conservation friends and partners in restoring critically-endangered Cape Flats Sand Fynbos and Peninsula Granite Fynbos to a 600 ha International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) biodiversity hotspot.

In an age of crippling environmental and climate crises, Tokai Park serves as a global exemplar of ecological restoration and conservation – surrounded as it is by development of every type, including urban, industrial and recreational zones as well as suburbia, farmland and a National Park subject to domestic and international environmental law and conventions.

Backed by sound ecological principles, solid scientific research and an eminently practicable vision, we contribute, when and where possible, to the restoration and conservation of Cape Flats Sand Fynbos, Peninsula Granite Fynbos at Tokai Park.

A dyed-in-the-wool community organisation of long standing, we define ourselves by what we give to the community. We regularly host four types of event:

  • alien hacking – great volunteering opportunities take place weekly
  • guest talks – exciting speakers educate us on interesting and relevant topics
  • guided walks – including spring flower walks as well as night walks and mushroom walks, and…
  • our annual general meeting.

From time to time we also host special events, outreaches and citizen science opportunities. For more information, please check our Events, Activities and Galleries pages – where special events also feature.
